Edited by: TOP DOCTORS® at 04/04/2023

Gynecological laparoscopy is a commonly used surgical procedure that is frequently performed to diagnose and treat female pelvic diseases. The laparoscope is a thin, light-emitting tube, similar to a telescope, and inserted into the abdomen through a small incision in the navel. Through this instrument, you can directly observe the organs inside the female pelvis and identify if there is something abnormal.

Most gynecological surgeries can be performed with the laparoscopic technique. Previously, there was concern about the safety of the procedure. Gynecological laparoscopic surgery is safe and useful for diagnosis in the following situations: pelvic pain with endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy, adnexal cysts or gynecological cancer . In most of these diseases laparoscopy, besides diagnosing, allows the treatment and solution of the problem.

Procedure of laparoscopic surgery

Gynecological laparoscopic surgery uses several incisions of 0.5 to 1 cm. Each incision is called a "port" and in each port a tubular instrument known as a trocar. During the procedure, specialized instruments are passed through the trocars and a special camera called the laparoscope. At the start of the procedure, the abdomen is inflated with carbon dioxide to provide the gynecologist with a working space and visibility. The laparoscope transmits images from the abdominal cavity to the high resolution video monitors of the operating room. During the operation, the gynecologist observes the detailed images of the abdomen in the monitor. The system allows to perform the same operations as traditional surgery but with smaller incisions.Gynecological laparoscopic surgery is as safe as traditional open surgery without putting aside that no surgical procedure is completely free of risk. The risks inherent in gynecological laparoscopic surgery are exceptional: lesion of the intestine or of a vessel (artery or vein) within the abdomen, with puncture. There are minor complications such as bleeding and bruising at the instrument inlet holes.

Post-surgical recommendations .

  • As in each surgical procedure it is necessary to follow the doctor's recommendations; you should take the medicines as they were indicated in the prescription.
  • It is normal for laparoscopic gynecological surgery to have abdominal pain that is usually mild and tolerable, as well as possible pain in the shoulders, both of which should decrease with medications ordered for this purpose.
  • As for food, ensure that the diet is light, ideally not containing milk or derived from it during the first week.
  • Do not perform any type of physical exercise before the review and resume sexual activity only after the doctor authorizes it.
